Sociocultural Anthropologist
specializing in political economy/economic anthropology
The University of California, Santa Barbara, Department of Anthropology, seeks a broadly trained sociocultural anthropologist with research interests in political economy at the Assistant Professor (tenure-track) or Associate Professor (tenured) level, beginning July 1, 2006. Applicants must have completed the Ph.D. at the time of appointment. Candidates should be well grounded in political economy and economic anthropology, with a focus on the effects of globalization and advanced capitalism in restructuring economies and societies of varying scales in both the developed and underdeveloped world. We particularly welcome a focus on “borderlands”, understood both as geopolitical boundaries and as spaces formed by the convergence of diverse and conflicting social, cultural and political forces. Thematic interests include, but are not limited to work, labor, migration/diasporas, poverty, new manufacturing centers and world markets. Regional focus is open, and both micro- and macro-economic analysis will be considered.
The successful candidate will have an active and ongoing ethnographic research program and strength in qualitative and quantitative methods of research and analysis. The department is especially interested in candidates who are capable of developing cross-disciplinary intellectual linkages across anthropology’s traditional subfields and between its humanities and social science orientations. The ideal candidate will contribute actively to our graduate research programs, and to our undergraduate curriculum, including teaching a large (ca. 800), introductory class in sociocultural anthropology.
Applications should be postmarked on or before January 15, 2006. A complete application includes a letter from the candidate describing current and future research interests and teaching philosophy; curriculum vitae; 3-5 copies of exemplary publications; and the names, addresses (postal and email), and telephone numbers of four referees. Please send applications to Dr. Barbara Voorhies, Search Committee Chair, Department of Anthropology, University of California, Santa Barbara CA 93106-3210.
The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service. The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
