A New Year, a New Building, and a New AGSA

by Kevin Vaughn

It's hard to believe, but it is already 1997 - a full two years since the Anthropology Graduate Student Association was created, and the first AGSA newsletter was published. Many things have changed since 1995. For one, the move into our new location in the Humanities Social Sciences Building (HSSB) is complete, and people finally seem to be settled (despite the relatively long trek to the library!) The membership of the AGSA board has changed as well (see this page for a listing of the new AGSA Board Members) while the objectives of AGSA remain similar. The original goal of the AGSA newsletter was to facilitate a sense of community and to foster interaction among graduate students of different subdisciplines within our diverse department. Two years later this still promises to be a worthy endeavor, and our top priority. The success of the previous newsletters attests to the importance of these goals.

As your outreach representatives and co-editors of the AGSA newsletter, Bonnie Yoshida and I want to share with you our goals for the future.
  • We plan to publish a newsletter once every quarter starting with this issue.
  • We plan to continue regular features that have been a part of the newsletter since its inception including the "Featured Graduate Student" (see page 4 for this quarter's Featured Grad Student - Maria Ibarra), and the "Graduate Student Achievements" listing (see pages 6 and 7).
  • We plan to introduce new features into the newsletter beginning in Spring, including faculty profiles, and a Where are they Now? segment featuring graduating PhDs who continued in the field of Anthropology.
  • We plan to be completely open to YOUR comments, suggestions, and contributions.

We urge you to let us know your comments and concerns. We want to be representatives, in that we want this newsletter to represent what is important to you as an anthropology grad student at UCSB. Bonnie and I look forward to our responsibilities as your outreach representatives. The following is a list of the new AGSA board members:

    Nathan Craig - President
    Justin Jennings - Vice President
    John Kantner - Treasurer
Kevin Vaughn, Bonnie Yoshida - Outreach
    Peter Paige - Undergraduate Relations
    Anastasia Panagakos - Art/Graphics
    Nitasha Sharma - Art/Graphics
