Ethnicity and trust in the textile industry of Surat City, India

The continuing vitality of ethnic enterprise in today's global arena has recently become a major focus of debate in the social sciences. Garrett will discuss these issues in the context of his research on ethnic community as a basis for trust among businessmen in the textile industry of Surat City in western India. He will explain why personalized ties based on kinship, caste, and sect remain so important. In addition, Garrett will examine the challenges facing the industry stemming from its rapid growth and accelerated rate of integration with larger economic and cultural systems at the national and global level.
