UCSB Anthropology Brown Bag Lecture Series Presents:

"Life During Wartime: Archaeology in Saraguro, Ecuador."

By Dennis Ogburn

Archaeological survey was conducted around Saraguro in the Southern Highlands of Ecuador to investigate the general prehistory of the area, the Inca conquest and occupation of the region, and the subsequent replacement of the local population with a group from elsewhere in the Inca Empire. I will be reporting on the survey and how the results address these issues. Warfare turns out to be a major theme in Saraguro, not only during the Inca invasion, but also in the one thousand years prior to the arrival of the Incas, and during the survey when Peruvians once again attacked Ecuador.
