Mexico and The United States

Activity:  

  • Document two events or circumstances involving the United States’ presence in Mexico.
  • Discuss their possible implications

Aim:

Analyze the impact US presence has on Mexico, its policies and its people 

Background:

Mexico’s history cannot be understood without reference to its lively interaction with the United States. Whether conflictive or not, certain events and circumstances have had an impact on the country’s trajectory. They have also played an important role in forging the lenses through which we perceive Mexico’s problems their solution.

Tasks:

  • Choose two events or circumstances involving American presence in Mexico. These can involve:
    • Political participation and or conflict
    • Property ownership
    • Investment
    • Production or assembly plants
    • Financial support
    • Trade and commerce
    • Entertainment
    • Human rights groups
    • Religion
    • Migration to Mexico
    • Indirect influence through the IMF or World Bank
    • Media
    • Etc.
  • Describe the context of each event or circumstance, including any background information we might need to understand how it came about
  • Discuss its possible implications:
    • What economic, social, cultural or political impact has it had (or can it have)?

Hand in:

Your assignment should include:

    • A title page stating:
      • Anth 135: Modern Mexican Culture: Myths and Dilemmas of Tradition and Change
      • Assignment number 2
      • Your name
      • A title depicting the events you have chosen to discuss
    • The main document (4 pages long; spacing 1.5, Font Arial or Times New Roman, 12 points) should have numbered subtitles, including:
      • A small summary of your findings and conclusions
      • A section describing the first case
      • A section describing the second case
      • Concluding discussion
      • Bibliography:
      • At least three sources should be used, of which at least two should be non-internet sources.  
      • Sources should be cited in the text. When you are quoting verbatim, you should use inverted commas
      References in the bibliography should include:
