Excavations

Beginning in 1980, subsurface surveys were conducted with trenches and augers around the Federsee, a once large lake and now a peat bog. The aim was to locate buried sites with preserved organic materials.

Four sites have been discovered and excavated with support from NSF, NGS, UREP, and UCSB. Participants have included volunteers and students from UCSB, U. of Michigan, U. of Washington, Arizona State U., Oberlin College, and the University of Tübingen.

Together the sites span the period from ca. 10,000 to 3000 BC.

Each column of the chart is linked to pages where you can find out more about each of the sites!
