The site of Kappel, discovered in 2002 and excavavted in 2003 and 2004, lies on a sand and gravel ridge complex extending out from the lakeshore in the northwest area of the Federsee. The vast majprity of artifacts on the main ridge derive from Late Paleolithic occupations, although a small Early Mesolithic occupation occurred as well.

Excavations were completed in 2007, producing a large assemblage of Late Palaeolithic materials. These included a bone harpoon, missing its tip, that measures approximately 19 cm in length. The site appears to represent repeated occupations by small groups, utilizing primarily local stone materials.

Excavations have also been carried out at another nearby lake, the Pfrukger Ried.
