152 Anthropology of Europe

This seminar examines the changing nature of culture and politics in contemporary Europe. Drawing on contemporary ethnographies of Europe, we will trace the development of anthropology in this region of the world and focus on specific topics that revolve around the idea of Europe and the more recent history of the European Union. These topics will include ethnic conflict, immigration, citizenship, religious faith, historical memory in the construction of national identities, and the cultural politics of European integration.
