This seminar offers a critical introduction to theories about nationalism and state formation from an anthropological perspective. Topics include nationalism and gender, nationalism and racism, and nationalism and social control. These topics are then related to contemporary challenges to the idea of the nation-state as posed by transnational processes and globalization.

Image: Joseph WrightThrough philosophy, theory and specific ethnographies, in this seminar we will explore both historical and contemporary perspectives on constructions of racial difference. We will discuss the political uses made of racial categories that accompanied the emergence of modern capitalism in the 19th century, and how new divisions of labor and specific economic incentives perpetuated (and continue to) the need to socially discriminate on the basis of "race".
