Tikal 13 - Conclusion

As you think about the similarities and differences between the uses of architecture at Tikal and n the modern world, make note of the following similarities in the structuring of space. In both cases the elite dwellings are massive compared to commoner's housing, and are always on platforms or higher ground than commoner's dwellings. Thus, a constant physical reminder of the social differences between the two groups. Also note that in both cases, the dwellings of the elite are immediately adjacent to large ceremonial complexes, and both the elite residences and the ceremonial precincts have very restricted access. Again, a reminder of the fact that the elites are closer to the gods than the common person. What other similarities can you think of?
