Final Essay

Final Essay (Due by 5 pm, Monday, June 2nd, HSSB 1003).

Anthropology 3 Final Essay Question
Deadline: Monday, June 2, 5 pm, 1003 HSSB

Answer ONE of the following questions:

1. Compare and contrast the collapse of the Classic Maya and Old Kingdom Egyptian civilizations, considering the role of environment vs. social factors, and the degree to which each civilization really collapsed.

2. Compare and contrast the Materialization of Ideology (ie: through monuments and objects) and its role in legitimating the authority of the ruling elite in the Moche and Mississippian civilizations. Answer the question completely in a well developed 4-6 page essay. You will need to combine lectures, the readings, and OUTSIDE SOURCES to adequately address the questions, and you should CITE at least 4 references regularly within the text and prepare a bibliography of references cited. Dr. Fagan’s texts should serve as an excellent introduction and guide to the issues involved in the questions, but only the World Prehistory textbook can count as one of the four sources. The other three should be taken from books and/or articles that you find in the library (web pages do NOT count as a source). If you are not sure how to find relevant outside sources, TALK TO A LIBRARIAN! The library is full of them and they are there to help! The textbooks and two useful books have been placed on 2 hr reserve: Robert Wenke, Patterns in Prehistory and Bruce Trigger, Early Civilizations. Begin researching and developing your essay very soon and consult your TA or Prof. Smith immediately if you have any difficulties. Read the questions carefully and be sure that your paper addresses all of the issues raised in the question. As with the midterm essay, consult the Tips section of the Web Site for style and citation format, and be sure to INCLUDE THE COVER SHEET from the Study Guide.
