455320 The sound recording ends and a titlecard appears: "First impressions can be mistaken. When the fight first started, one informant told us that it was about incest. However, subsequent work with other informants revealed that the fight stemmed from quite a different cause."

462320 A second titlecard follows: "We learned that several former members of the village were visiting. These visitors were invited back by some of their kinsmen. However, they also had old enemies in the village, so the situation was volatile. The visitors refused to work in the garden, yet demanded to be fed, and thus, tensions grew until a fight erupted. One of the visitors -- Mohesiwä -- demanded plantains from a woman -- Sinabimi . She refused him. He beat her and she ran into the village screaming and crying."

477600 Fade-in from black: "The film opens as Sinabimi is comforted by her sister. Her brother, Uuwä, is infuriated by the beating.

483200 "He [Uuwä ] takes up his club and marches to the center of the village and publicly insults Mohesiwä . Mohesiwä comes out to fight.

793720 "Lineage two [Lineage 1222] is the largest in the village; the recent history of the lineage has been marked by a struggle between Nanokawäand Möawä. The problem was temporarily resolved several years ago when Nanokawä and his followers left the village, leaving Möawä the undisputed headman. However, Nanokawä and his followers still had many ties to the village. When Nanokawä's brothers-in-law, in lineage number one [Lineage 2968], persuaded Nanokawä to rejoin the village, the old hostilities resurfaced. The club fight between Uuwä and Mohesiwä can be viewed as another expression of hostility between the supporters of Nanokawä and Möawä.

830240 "When Yoinakuwä and his brother [Keböwä] escalated the conflict to an ax fight, the situation worsened. Members of lineage number two [1222] were now being forced to divide their loyalties between two groups of affines which emphasized an internal cleavage that already existed within their lineage. In order to prevent further conflict between his own lineage members, Möawä remained in his hammock throughout the fight. However, if the fight had escalated or if any of his close relatives had been injured, he would have been compelled to fight. Then Möawä's agnates would have been forced to support him or Nanokawä and perhaps cause a fission in Möawä's village.
