As part of this course, students utilize computer software that allows them to explore a region in Peru in South America, as if they were conducting their own survey. The following screen images are from the software, which was developed by Kirk Frye and Dr. Schreiber:

Students are presented with general information from the Carhuarazo Valley in Peru, including environmental data and general maps of the region:

From this point, students can get a close up view of the various subregions in the Carhuarazo Valley, simply by clicking on areas of interest...

In each subregion, students can freely explore archaeological sites...

Students can zoom in to each site, where they can view a map and obtain detailed information on the architecture and artifacts identified at each site...

Through careful exploration of the region, students develop regional chronologies and identify important settlement patterns and their implications for the cultural evolution of the region. To assist them in this process, the software provides plenty of background information on architecture, ceramics, and environment:
