2001 Humanities & Social Sciences Building - phone (805) 893-2257
College of Letters and Science
University of California, Santa Barbara 93106-3210

Note: The Anthropology department does NOT maintain student files for the minor. It is the students' responsibility to inform the department of completion of the minor during the academic quarter that they plan on graduating. Upon completion of all requirements, you must submit notification of completion with an unofficial transcript and New Student Profile (if you have any transfer work) to the Anthropology Department. This must be done before you graduate. Otherwise, the minor will not be recognized.

Preparation for the Minor:

All lower-division courses and up to 5 upper-division anthropology units may be take on a P/NP basis. The following courses are required:
  • Anthropology 2 (4 units)
  • Anthropology 3 or 3SS (4 or 5 units)
  • Anthropology 5 (4 units)
Upper Division:

18 upper-division anthropology units are required. Students are strongly encouraged to discuss course selection with the undergraduate faculty advisor. Substitutions and waivers are subject to approval by the Chair of the department. (Please note that one substitution is allowed, typically the course that crosses over between the major and the minor.)

Minor Regulations:

The minor will be listed on your diploma and will be posted on your official transcript at the time of graduation provided that the following conditions must also be met for official recognition of the minor:
  • The sponsoring department reports your completion of the minor prior to the posting of your degree.
  • At least 18 upper-division quarter units are completed for the minor. (Waivers cannot reduce the requirement below this number.)
  • At least 12 of the upper-division units for the minor are completed while in residence at UCSB.
  • Your UC grade-point average in pertinent upper-division courses is 2.0 or higher.
  • No more than 5 upper-division units overlap between this minor and the upper-division portion of your major(s) or other minor(s). If overlap is greater with your major(s), completion of the minor will not be formally recognized; if overlap with other minor(s) is greater, only the first minor reported will be noted on your transcript.
  • No reference will be made to the minor on any progress checks or degree clearance forms.
Any questions pertaining to Anthropology's academic minor should be directed to the Undergraduate Staff Advisor at (805) 893-2257 or by e-mail.
