Answers to the Most Commonly Asked Academic Advising Questions by Anthropology Students:

What can you do with an Anthropology major?

Your options are unlimited with a B.A. in Anthropology, since the interdisciplinary nature of the major allows you access to all kinds of different career fields. What is more important, is what field you want to go into after graduation at UCSB! Do you want to go to graduate school, do want to start working for a large company, small company, non-profit, software, museums, tourism, etc. The possibilities are endless! To help you find your career destiny, here is a site to explore: Counseling and Career Services, what can I do with a major in?

How do I petition a class?

You need to come by the Anthropology department or the College of Letters & Science and obtain a "Petition for Degree Requirements". Fill out the document and return it to the Anthropology department, with a self-address stamped envelope and any supporting documents; course descriptions, syllabi, etc. Expect it to take up to 2 weeks for the petition to be processed and returned to you.

What forms do I need to declare/change my major? Double-major?

To change or declare a major, you will need to bring an unofficial transcript (available free from the Registrar's office by first calling the night time RBT menu) and a new student profile(if you have transferable units) to the Anthropology department. You will then fill out an "Undergraduate Petition to Change Major, Emphasis, or College" (yellow form). While you fill this out, the undergraduate advisor will take the documents you brought with you and fill out the major requirement form. You will receive a copy of your transcript, new student profile, major requirement sheet, an undergraduate brochure, current year's schedule and a copy of the related fields list if you are a cultural anthropology major.

To double-major, you will follow the above steps and also fill out a "Memo of Understanding for Double-Major" (green form) and bring a self-addressed stamped envelope. The undergraduate advisor will sign the form on the appropriate line, make a copy of it, and give the original paperwork back to you. Please take these originals over to your second interested major department, who will then sign and forward your paperwork to the College of Letters & Science.

I am interested in taking an Anthropology minor. How do I sign up?

If you are interested in doing a minor in Anthropology, please come see the undergraduate advisor in the main office. Please bring with you a copy of your unofficial transcript and a new student profile if you have transferable work. Please be sure to keep in close contact with the advisor on your progress. Though you are allowed to take 1 course P/NP, it is suggested that you take all your work on a letter-grade basis. If you are at all interested in pursuing the major, please use the major requirements as a guideline.

What internships are available in Anthropology?

Internships are important because they give you an opportunity to apply what you have learned in school to a "real world" situation. You can work in the Repository, the Central Coast information Center, or museum. Please note - most internships are not paid and for each unit, 3 hours of commitment are required a week.

I am interested in doing a study abroad program, where do I start?

If you are interested in going abroad to study, please go to the Education Abroad Program office, located in SH 2431, (805) 893-2958. Under the EAP program, your units and grades will transfer, and they offer semester or one-year programs, to many different countries.

If you find a program not sponsored by the EAP program, you must do the following: take the program information over to Admissions, 1210 Cheadle Hall, (805) 893-4013, to make sure that the program you are interested in will be accepted by UCSB. Only units will transfer, not the grades.

In both situations, please bring by the program you are interested in to the Anthropology department, where the advisor can tell you what course work will count where. For more advice on going abroad, please see the undergraduate advisor or our department faculty advisor on EAP, Prof. Stuart T. Smith, (805) 893-7887.

What is the Senior Honors Thesis?

The senior thesis is a two-quarter course (Anth 195A & B) in which you will focus on a substantial research project in coordination with a professor. Upon completion of your thesis with a B or above, you will receive "Distinction in the Major" at graduation. You will learn to follow a major project through to completion. You will learn how to gather and analyze data, and you will learn how to talk to professors and professionals about their subject. On a personal level, you will gain confidence, improve your writing skills, improve your ability to make oral presentations, and improve your time-management skills. These are the skills you will need on a professional level in whatever career you choose to undertake (especially graduate work!)

If you are interested in the senior thesis, you will need to pick up an application, available in the Anthropology main office (2001 Humanities and Social Sciences Bldg.). Once the professor of record signs it, return it to the undergraduate advisor and you will receive an approval code to add the course. A 3.4 GPA is required.

Can I take a course for the major P/NP?

No major or pre-major course can be take P/NP. Note: If you have already satisfied the minimum 40 upper-division unit requirement for the major, then you can choose to take Anthropology courses P/NP. But, make sure that you have the minimum requirements satisfied!

Do I have to get a grade of at least a "C" in order for the course
to apply towards my major?

Here are the basic rules to follow for graduation:

  1. Overall cumulative GPA for all courses taken at UCSB must be 2.0 or higher.
  2. Overall cumulative GPA for all courses taken for your major, both lower-division preparation and upper-division courses, must be a 2.0 or higher at the time of graduation.

That's it! A grade as low as a "D-" will satisfy major/general education requirement. You just need to make sure that your cumulative GPA for rules a & b mentioned above stay above a 2.0. You always have the option to repeat a course in which you received a grade of "C-" or lower, but as long as you do not fail, the course will apply as credit towards your major requirements.

How do I find out if I am on track for graduation?

Please bring a copy of your unofficial transcript and a new student profile (if you have transfer work) and come into the Anthropology department. The undergraduate advisor will pull out your file, sit with you and go over your progress, noting down any missing coursework. This will only be for your major requirements.

It is highly recommended that you do a junior and a senior progress check, to check over your other requirements for graduation: general education, residency, unit requirements, etc. with the College of Letters & Science.

How do I graduate?

You must declare your intention to graduate on GOLD within the first two weeks of the quarter you wish to finish. To have your minor recognized, please see the undergraduate advisor. If you are graduating Spring quarter, you will also have an opportunity to reserve your spot for commencement, which happens only once a year. You do not need to do anything at your department, other than to do a final check on your major requirements.

Good luck!
