STATEMENT OF SUPPORT FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS SEEKING COST OF LIVING ADJUSTMENT

Department of Anthropology, UCSB. Casey Walsh, Chair

On February 28, 2020, the Faculty of the Department of Anthropology  at U.C. Santa Barbara voted unanimously to adopt the following statement:

"The Department of Anthropology faculty supports the graduate students in their efforts to secure a Cost-of-Living-Adjustment (COLA) to bring graduate students out of rent burden. We base our support on the recognition of structural inequalities that undermine the public mission of the University of California.

The Department of Anthropology will not penalize graduate students for engaging in this strike, nor will we endorse any disciplinary measures directed at graduate students who have participated in the strike. This includes, but is not limited to, graduate students who participate in COLA events, TAs withholding grades subsequent to the initiation of the strike at UCSB, or graduate students on full strike. Individual faculty will choose the form and extent of their participation or non-participation in COLA actions. We will keep channels of communication open with all graduate students regardless of their involvement and participation in the strike."
