The remarkable discovery of the Iceman in the Alps is well known and much discussed. Missing from these discussions, however, is the wealth of information we have about the cultures around the Alps when he was alive. This talk will place him in context by discussing archaeological evidence drawn from a number of remarkable village sites in Switzerland and southern Germany, providing unparalleled knowledge of lifeways in the Late Neolithic/Chalcolithic in this region of Europe.
